RESEARCH INTERESTS

Protective and toxic effects of natural substances and drugs on cellular energy turover, ion fluxes in mitochondria and mechanisms of apoptosis.
Molecular modelling in drug discovery and design.

LABORATORY TECHNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Protein chemistry techniques: absorbtion spectroscopy methods (determination the amount of cytochromes c + c1, and cytochrome a in mitochondria and heart mucle fibers).
Cellular bioenergetics techniques: isolation of mitochondria from heart, skeletal muscle and liver, preparation of skinned heart and skeletal muscle fibers;fluorimetric, oxygraphic and ionometric techniques.
Molecular biology techniques: DNA and RNA extraction, PCR and RT-PCR.

COLLABORATION

Prof. Nils-Erik Saris, Department of Applied Chemistry and Microbiology, Viikki Biocenter 1, University of Helsinki, Finland. Research visits in: 2000 (4 months), 2001 (2 months), 2003 (2 months).
